Blog Setup and Management

It's all the rage...blogging.

In this brave new world of FaceBook, MySpace, Twitter and countless other social networking, public commenting and sharing sites, companies of every industry, public, private or otherwise, have joined the fray by contributing their two-cents' worth on a regular basis for the purpose of promoting their respective offerings.

If this is all Greek to you, let's back up a moment. First of all, what is a blog? A blog (a contraction of the term "weblog") is a type of website, usually maintained by an individual, with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. That readers are able to leave comments in an interactive format is an inviting aspect of many blogs.


Why does a business need a blog?

In a business context, a blog serves a couple of important functions. First, it provides a forum for presentation and discussion about company issues, products, services, etc., from a more personal and/or interesting standpoint than standard venues of publicity. Second, a blog on a company website alerts the search engines to new content every time a new posting is made which improves search ranking for the company website.

This latter point is one of the most compelling reasons to have a blog in the first place. However, blogging can be a full-time job and frequently demands that a company assign someone the responsibility of maintaining its flow of information and promoting (yes...promoting!) its existence. This is where the above-mentioned social networking sites come into play. Now, not only do you need to have a blog, you also need to be innovatively creative in drawing attention to your blog through frequent clever posts on today's most popular social networking sites, such as Twitter and the like.
